The first male believer and the Prophet's constant companion, and husband of Fatimah al-Zahra. Shia sources hold that he was explicitly designated successor at Ghadir Khumm. He assumed the caliphate after Uthman, faced internal conflicts (Jamal, Siffin, Nahrawan), and was martyred by a sword strike while prostrating in prayer at the mosque of Kufa.
