Living through a period of relative weakness in Umayyad control, he devoted himself to teaching and founded circles of jurisprudence and hadith that drew a wide circle of students - earning the title al-Baqir, 'the one who splits knowledge open.'

Expanding scholarly and juristic activity among Shia Muslims, laying groundwork for Imam al-Sadiq's school that followed.
